Public Urged To Call Out Dangerous Drivers
Garda Superintendent Liam Geraghty has called on people to “call out” any dangerous or unsafe behaviour on the roads.
So far, 600 persons have been arrested in December for driving under the influence of an intoxicant – either alcohol or drugs.
“600 people took alcohol or took drugs and still got behind the wheel of a car, putting themselves and possibly their passengers and all other road users at risk.” Supt Geraghty said.
“In the same period over 4,600 drivers were detected for driving in excess of the speed limit last week… putting everyone on the road in danger.
“Over 425 vehicles were seized by gardaí for no insurance but they decided to take their cars out on the road.
“We don’t want to knock on anyone else’s door at the end of 2025 or the start of 2026,” the garda said.
“There have been 189 deaths on our roads so far this year.”
“It’s the highest number of deaths in over a decade on our roads despite some of the advances we made, particularly after Covid, in reducing numbers.”
The Garda Press Officer made a appeal to drivers, their friends and family and the public as the New Year approaches.
“Everybody has a role to play; if you know that somebody is putting themselves at risk, why wouldn’t you challenge them? Why wouldn’t you ask them to moderate their behaviour rather than standing beside their funeral and grieving them?”
“You might actually save their lives.”
